Here we come....2009!
I hope everyone had a spectacular Christmas and I wish you a happy new year!
I wish I had more to share but life has been a bit uneventful for me lately. I just completed my first semester of college and I am still completely unsure of the direction I want to pursue in my educational endeavors. As far as State Council goes, I am greatly looking forward to the upcoming Pennsylvania Farm Show.
I find this time of year to be the most difficult for me as far as motivation goes. Perhaps it is the weather. I typically do not make New Year’s resolutions, but this year I am trying. I have already purchased a fitness pass for at school, so now I have no excuse for not exercising. Also, I have a few art projects and sewing projects and scrapbooks to finish. Also, I must begin to make decisions about school. I think this is a good time of year to begin to set my 4-H goals for the upcoming year. In reality, there is only a single month left to our term on PS4-HC. It defiantly does not seem like a year, but soon, a new council will continue in our place. I wish them the all the best! Being a Council member is a great honor, and a great responsibility. This experience can teach a person much about life, if they are open to those lessons. But it will soon be time to move on to new goals. I encourage you all to begin to set your own goals for the new 4-H year as well. Here are some of mine:
1. Improve my ability in the show ring, I currently have a crossbred steer and hope to purchase a lamb as well. (I wish I had time for more!)
2. Complete a sewing project, maybe another gown or maybe a costume.
3. Woodworking…I hope to make something larger and useful that I can keep forever, but have yet to decide.
4. Attend as many events as I can around my college and work schedule.
Most importantly, I want to enjoy this year of 4-H as much as I can because even though I have time left, the next year will be almost impossible to stay active especially since I would love to study abroad. I have spent a great deal of time over the past few months reflecting, every memory, every experience in a person’s life is significant if you allow it to be. I have been so blessed! As the start of 2009 is upon us, I wish for you all to be able to look back over past year in peace, seeing all that you are blessed with. Allow the lessons of the past year to help you set goals for the coming year. I am terrible at setting goals, but this year I hope to improve that and stay motivated to continue on to complete those projects and make the changes in my life I know are completely necessary. Once again, don’t hesitate to set your 4-H goals and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR! See you all at the Farm Show!

The End Is Near!
This year, I was able to attend the State Leadership Conference, which I’ve never been to before. I started off my year there learning what it takes to be a great leader. At the end of the weekend I was inducted, and was given one of those unforgettable green jackets. My term just started, and I had so much to learn; I did most of my learning the next weekend at training for the “seven chosen teens”. It was a weekend I’ll never forget! I was all excited to miss a little bit of school and be at a 4-H event, but that weekend I learned that being a leader isn’t all fun and games! It is usually fun, but also does require hard work, a lot of time, and very long days, sometimes.
I also got to attend State Capital Days. This was the group’s first “appearance” as a team. I know I had a blast spending time with other 4-Hers interested in congress, we even had to pass our own bill; that sure was an experience in itself! As the summer rolled around, we all headed home to our own counties and regions. I was a camp counselor at my regional overnight camp, as well as Westmoreland County’s day camp. Both were a blast like always, but I’ll never ever forget my canoe trip at day camp. My canoe was the first to go out and all the others started going the other way, so I got out and pulled the boat through rapids, only to find out that we were indeed the ones going the right way. Everyone laughed about that for days!
I think my favorite new experience this year was State Days, because I’ve always wanted to go and take part in some of the contests, but I couldn’t because it always seemed to be during my family’s vacation week. This year I was not a contestant, but that didn’t really matter. I got to start the event off by having a blast, as we performed our “Olympic Skit” in the Eisenhower Auditorium. It was such a blast!! I loved being up on the huge stage, and I think the performance really got everyone pumped. It was sad to see the week come to an end, but great to see how well everyone did.
Now as I finish up my year, I get to have dinner with the governor at the beginning of January. I cannot wait, it’s not like everyone can say they ate with the governor. I’ll also take part in the opening ceremonies for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Then at the end of the month, my team and I will get to showcase all of our hard work at the 2009 State Leadership Conference. I think saying I’m excited would be an understatement. I hope many people who’ve gone before decide to come again, as well as seeing many new faces.
That’s all for me in the year 2008! I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year and see you at SLC!!

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the holiday season!!I know after Thanksgiving I will be heading off to Atlanta for the National 4-H Congress along with a few others from the state and around the Nation.I believe we will be doing some things similar to our Leadership Conference only on a much larger scale. We will be meeting lots of new people, participating in workshops, but also getting to see the city of Atlanta. I don't know a whole lot else about it but I will be sure to let you know when I return.
Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving

The End is Near
Pennsylvania 4-H State Council is much more time- consuming than anyone could ever imagine. I think that it really helped to prepare me for my future college life. During my term, I relied on my parents less and less to help me through assignments. They did not need to remind me about upcoming events. Throughout the term, my advisors helped me learn that excuses can only get you so far. You need to get your work done, and done on time. Whenever I’m talking about excuses, I always like to throw this one little quote out there, something that my favorite teacher used to say: “Excuses are like bellybuttons, everyone has one.” You should try to memorize this quote, and try not to make excuses. Council is much more than “being the face of 4-H”, it’s an experience like no other. Words can not even explain all of the opportunities one may be offered.
Some advice for any incoming council member, you must prepare yourself for the most amazing year of your life. But also be ready to put 110 percent of the work in. You will really thank yourself later. Any PA 4-Hers should come up and talk to someone in one of those one of a kind green blazers. I promise we don’t bite. Ask us what we’ve been up to, and how you can become more involved. Ask us anything that you are possibly wondering about; I’m sure one of us will have an answer.
Happy Holidays Everyone!

hello
I hope this cold weather is treating everyone okay. November has been one busy month for me. Council and I had our phone conference this month. We finished up the last plans for state conference and talked about Farm Show. On November 7th I had the chance to attend a Harvest Party of the Ag people. The Southeastern PA AG Business Association was generous enough to give 4-H money and I was the representative. I was also able to attend Lycoming County’s 4-H Can Skate. I was able to help hand out the awards to the members and enjoy a night of skating. At this event I gave Lycoming County Council a certificate of appreciation and I gave Ev Simmons a little gift of thanks for helping me through the year. I have been busy collecting pop tabs and studying my lines for conference. I hope you all are excited for State Leadership Conference as my fellow council members and I are.
Till next time,

Reflections
As we are on the brink of winter, I hope everyone is filling their schedule with autumn activities before the snow comes, unless you are from the eastern side of the state. This past weekend, I finally was able to go home for a visit. It was in good timing too because I needed to gather some warmer clothes for the upcoming month! My visit to Somerset County began Wednesday evening and lasted until Sunday. I crammed as much into those few days as possible, including a few 4-H events. On Thursday, we celebrated the achievements of Somerset 4-H’ers at our annual Recognition Banquet and on Saturday, my club held its wrap-up meeting to finish up the year.
On Thursday, I slept in before heading into town for some appointments. I must admit, I was a little nervous about driving since it had been over a month since I was last behind the wheel. After visiting my aunt and running errands for her, I went to pick my sister up and ended up helping decorate for the banquet. It was good to see an excellent turnout from our new Somerset County Council members who will be serving for the upcoming year. Eventually we left, returning later for the banquet later. After everyone enjoyed dinner, I had the honor of speaking. I shared a little about my 4-H experience well as informing the audience on State Council in general. Other 4-H members shared what they learned through showing livestock and attending the national 4-H archery contest. Also, achievement awards and scholarships were presented to recipients. Thank you to all sponsors and Congrats to all recipients! It was a great evening and the dinner was just as tasty as always!
At our roundup event on Saturday, club leaders and members shared about their projects and activities over the past year. One of the things I enjoy about my club is the diversity in regards to the projects taken. Some of the projects I completed this year were Market Steer, Market Lamb and a gardening project. Our gardening theme this year was “Blooms for Birds, Bees and Butterflies”. It was interesting to see how successful everyone was. My sister, cousin and I planted our garden together, and actually attracted some butterflies!! We did lose a few plants but what did make it thrived. Now, the club will begin to focus on practicing for the farm show square dance competition. I would encourage other clubs to consider this if you do not dance already, it’s a great experience!!!
In my little bit of free time, my grandfather and I went to see and work with my new steer. (It cannot be at home because my Pap had back surgery). Now I will be going home more often to work with it and I am looking forward to summer so much more. It was good to go home and see everyone. I especially love Fall so it was good to be surrounded by mountains and the open spaces rather than being on campus for a little. (I love campus but it will never compare with home!!!)
I hope everyone is having a great fall and enjoying Penn State football!!

Happy October
I hope everyone is having fun during this Fall season. As winter rapidlyapproaches and a new year dawning many 4-H's are hard at work getting ready for the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January. After the Farm Show there are only a few short weeks before the State Leadership Conference. The State Council is hard at work to make this year's conference a memorable one. Early bird registrations are already open, so visit your local county extension office and sign up. Remember this year's theme is Dive into Leadership. I hope to see you there immersing yourself into all the possibilities .

Don't Be Afraid to Be a Leader
We spent a bunch of time making final decisions about the 2009 State Leadership Conference. I’m personally excited about all the new workshops that are being offered. It seems like the last few years have had some repeats. A few of my favorites are Connecting with Different Age Groups, Managing Change, Problem Solving, and Working with the Public.
Those are just a few of the workshops that I know I could use to better myself as a leader. I’m also pretty psyched for our Saturday night speaker. I saw a few clips of his work and cannot wait to see him in person. Hopefully you will all agree.
Remember to keep your eyes and ears open for information about the Leadership Conference. Don’t forget that all registrations have to be in no later than December 19th. If you are a little nervous, bring a friend, then you’ll both have a great time, and a lot of stories to share back at you county level.
Oh and I almost forgot, if you’ve been saving those pop tabs, the conference is your chance to show off just how many you have. The tabs will be collected by counties and weighed. The county with the most tabs will be recognized for all their hard work. If you haven’t been saving them, don’t worry. You still have time. My new favorite thing to do is “detab” all the soda cans at parties. You’ll be surprised how many you come home with!!!
Until next time,
Emily Gabriel

hello
Now that winter is setting in and animals put away for winter I hope all you members are looking forward to the State leadership Conference! My fellow Council members and I are busily planning and finishing the last preparations to make this event wonderful. On October 11th Council got together for a meeting and finalized a lot of the plans for State Conference. We hope that all the members over 13 years and over will join us. I have sent out 15 donor letters to help receive donors for our conference, and have even had one donate. I am at college right now and I have even had the chance to talk with my floor in the resident hall about saving pop tabs for me, and they are. On October 15th I had the chance to attend the Lycoming County’s County Council and talk to them about State Conference and encourage them to attend and to continue to save the pop tabs. October 21st was the Teen Advisory Committee meeting where I was asked to speak on State Council and State Leadership Conference. It was also held in my county so I was a part of the quest they had along with serving drinks and ice cream. I had the chance to talk with other teens in Montour, Snyder, Union, Columbia and Lycoming Counties about the opportunities on running for State Council and was even informed on two of the members present were running. Next month is a busy one for me. With school coming to an end for the semester and then I have two 4-H events back to back. Even with all that I will still find the time to study my scripts and make sure everything is around for January 30th, 31st and February 1st to make a wonderful conference.

hello
This month has been kind of busy for me. With school work, college activities and 4-H events, it’s hard to know what sleep is. State Council had a conference call on September 15th. We talked about our State Leadership Conference, and we are starting to finalize different ideas. I know for some or even most of the 4-Hers, that the 4-H year is coming to a close. With only a little time left before the snow hits Pennsylvania and the animals are left to rest for the winter. Come to the State Conference and listen to guest speaker’s talk about how to work with the public, manage different age groups, build character and run effective meetings to just name a few. Take the skills you can learn during the weekend back to your clubs and share with everyone. But, let’s keep up the pop tab collecting, as we want to help the Ronald McDonald House. The tabs will be collected on Friday night of the Conference so make sure you remember to bring the tabs along. State Council and I hope to see you at the State Leadership Conference January 30, 31 and February 1st.
Until next time

September Happenings
Here on campus, I feel like the biggest difference from home is the faster pace of life. I was always busy at home, but I still can’t believe how quickly September has gone by! This month has had very many exciting things going on in the 4-H program. This past weekend the first donor tailgate was held before the Penn State football game. I was awarded the opportunity to meet with 4-H alumni and donors. The event signified the beginning of the Keystone Society, an organization of 4-H donors. The gifts they provide will benefit 4-H in the form of an endowment. The event included delicious food, music, and of course college football on a large screen. I enjoyed chatting with everyone about the impact of 4-H in my life and the struggles and successes I have experienced so far as a freshman at college. It was great to hear their stories as well.
In other interesting news, I was watching TV this week when I learned about an initiative of some other 4-H alumni. Various country music stars have teamed up with National 4-H to produce a new CD entitled Clover Country: Songs from Famous 4-H Alumni. Proceeds from the sale of these will be used to support 4-H as well. For more info, visit www.clovercountrycd.com.
So many people work so hard to ensure the success of 4-H now and in the years to come. Thank you for all your hard work!!! At the county level, make sure you let your local sponsors know how much their generosity means too! The lessons we learn in 4-H are something that stays with you always.
Happy fall everyone! (and football season too!)

Back to the Basics
As soon as I got back home, I was doing final prep for my county’s fair queen contest and packing. I decided to opt out of my family vacation to the beach and stay with my aunt, so I could have the amazing opportunity to run for fair queen. (The interview portion was the third day of my family’s trip.) I think I did very well at the interview. During the live part of the competition, I gave a great speech about “Why you should come to my fair”. Everyone said the speech was awesome, but unfortunately didn’t make top four. I always have next year!
Then, out of nowhere was my fair week. It went great! I took two firsts, a third, and a fifth with my rabbits. In sewing, I got a second on my gown I made, and little clutch to go with it. Then, on Friday, I spent most of the day preparing my pooches for the big dog show. Both of my dogs did very well. My little sister showed our younger pup, Harley, and shocked everyone when she placed second in showmanship!! My dog, Scrappy Doo, and I did very well placing in every event from dress up to obedience. I even tried a new class this year, brace, which involved both of my dogs. We did okay, and actually ended up winning a first place ribbon. Overall my fair week was…excellent. It was a great way to finish off the summer!
Now I’m back to school and very busy with field hockey practice and games everyday, plus keeping up those grades and working on the weekends. I’m not sure how I even find time to have fun, but I do. So as we all get back into the school groove, remember to have fun and do your best.
Check back for some updates.

hello 4-H members
This month has been busy for me. Not with just 4-H events but with college things also. During August 3-7 State Council had a meeting and then State Achievement Days. Members had a lot of fun with opening skit, there contest and with the awards. The Union County Fair was from August 3-9th. During this week I had a display on What is State Council, to help show members ages 16 and older how they can become involved at the State level. I had my district horse show on August 16th, but I did not make it on to the State show. August 19th I attended Ag Progress Days, where I wore my shirt and helped to promote 4-H. Also some of the State Council met with Mr. Eckel who is a donor to 4-H. My summer came to an end on August 22nd when I moved into college and started my college classes. It’s been one week at college and it is very different. As you go back to school, keep up with the different 4-H events going on and State Council hopes to see you at the State Leadership Conference January 30, 31 and February 1st.
Until next time

August Update
I am pleased to let everyone know, I survived my first week of college!!! These past few weeks have been super busy.
First, at the beginning of August, we all gathered here on campus for State Achievement Days! Congratulations to all participants on another great event!! I enjoyed all of our State Council activities and time spent with my team, it was fun. After leaving to go home with my county, our bus broke down!! We spent at least two hours waiting for another bus to come to the rescue!
When I got home…finally…it was time to start getting ready for the county fair. The Somerset County Fair was held Aug 16-23. It was another difficult week for me because it was the end of my reign as 2007 Fair Queen. The contest went well…I was too stubborn to cry during my speech. I also showed a lamb and a steer this year. I had a lot of fun showing my steer in the showmanship class and learned a lot more this year. The best part of the week was spending time with my friends from past fairs and 4-H. In between all the preparation for fair, I also packed for college. I moved in this past Saturday. It was so hard to say goodbye to everyone since it will be a while until I see them. So now I’m here in State College, rushing around to classes and trying to get my work completed.
Here at school, I am in the college of Agricultural Sciences. Currently, I am considering an animal science degree with the business management option. Yesterday, we had an exciting day as new students with a field trip to several farms/facilities. My favorite was a nearby wildlife refuge where they have all types of exotic animals.
I never really pictured myself attending school here, studying to work in the agriculture industry. I am so thankful for my 4-H involvement because it was my initial exposure to animal sciences. It makes this experience so much better. Plus, I haven’t been lost yet thanks to all those years attending State Days!!!
In closing, I hope everyone is off to a great start back to school! Meanwhile, I’ll be studying or enjoying all Penn State has to offer here at University Park!
Forever bleeding green, (but I still had to show some nittany lion spirit!!)

hello 4-H members
This month has been a very busy one for me. I have contacted two groups to be sponsors for our upcoming State Leadership Conference. I have also been in Florida competing on the National teem for the state of Pennsylvania in a club called Family Career and Community Leaders of America. This club is from my school and I competed in a public speaking event on how to keep students active and healthy. I received a bronze medal in the senior event. I attended the Lycoming County Fair on July 18th to receive a scholarship and I wore my State Officer Shirt to help promote 4-H. While at the fair I was asked about State Council and what we do while a member on council and of my experiences in 4-H. I entered a display on being a Council member, what it entails and how to become one. In August my display will be at the Union County fair for other people to look at and maybe coming to other fairs around my area also. During the week of July 21st to 25th I volunteered at Lycoming College for their Lyco for kids event. I had the chance to help kids with the different projects in the class. From a volcano to finding leaves for a tee shirt to making name tags. This experience was very awarding and helpful. July 26th was my 4-H round up for horses. After one long day I received first in all my classes. Well it was easy for the judge since I was the only one in my class. I am now waiting for Districts which is August 16th. Whew, After all this i have been working on my skit, podcast and opening script for State Days,. It has been a challenge trying to get everything done. I do hope you all chose to attend State Days and have the chance to meet members from all over Pennsylvania.
Until Next time,

So Long Summer
Just think, State Days are only about a week away! Being on state council has afforded me so many opportunities this year. I was asked to be camp counselor for Westmoreland County Day camp. Fortunately, it was in the middle of other commitments, so I was able to do it! After committing, I discovered that on the last day of camp, everyone gets the chance to canoe down the river! Of course I was super pumped for that day, because canoeing is something I like to do, but don't get much of a chance. However, if you asked me how I felt about canoeing when I got home, you would here a completely different attitude. I actually had to get out and push! It definitely was not my favorite part of day camp!!
And I know that summer is coming to a close as I prepare for our Westmoreland County Fair. Our fair is always the very last thing we do in summer, then school starts the next week. I am getting my dogs ready with some last minute work. I have gathered up my gown that I made for submission. The most exciting thing is that I got nominated to run for the Westmoreland Fair Queen, so I have been preparing essays and speeches for the week.
See you all at State Days!

Exchange Trip Update
I hope everyone’s summer is going great—It’s hard to believe is almost over! One of the highlights of summer in Somerset County is the 4-H Interstate Exchange Trip. For many years our county has hosted and traveled to states across the country through this program. (The first year you travel the next you host or vise versa) I participated in an exchange with Dickinson County Kansas in 2006-2007. It was a great learning experience. While in Kansas, we visited places that helped us learn about their state’s history, industry, geography (not all of Kansas is flat), government and of course, 4-H program. The trip also helped us form lasting personal relationships and gave us experience traveling so far from home for so long (without our parents).
This summer, the tradition continued as Somerset County hosted Thurston County, Washington on June 24 to July 1. After arrival in Pittsburgh, delegates traveled to Somerset for an ice cream party and “get acquainted” games. The next morning, everyone expanded their knowledge and understanding of one of PA’s greatest industries by touring a local dairy farm. Next, the group visited some Amish shops where they could witness the production of leather goods and tasty candies including my favorite: Maple Products! The evening concluded with a dance and picnic.
Thursday, the 4-H’ers and chaperones departed for Gettysburg. After a long bus ride, they toured the battlefields and stopped at the visitor’s center. Later that night, everyone went on a “Ghost Tour” of the town. Friday consisted of a tour of the Mason Dixon Farm nearby and fun adventures in Hershey Park.
The next day, delegates visited the Flight 93 Temporary Memorial and Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Sunday was a “Family Day” and my family chose to spend it at the lake. My sister and the girl staying with her relaxed and went swimming as well as went to visit some local places like the covered bridge in our township.
Finally, Monday was all about Somerset County! The day began by exploring one of our most important industries: coal mining. First stop was to a strip cut mine were participants learned about the techniques used such as the massive dragline on site. Next, everyone headed to the Quecreek Mine Rescue site to hear the story of what happened hundreds of feet underneath them. (In 2002, an accident occurred when the crew broke through into a old abandoned mine filled with water, trapping the 9 men in the high point of the flooded mine for days. A shaft was painstakingly drilled and all were lifted to safety). After meeting some of the men, members hit the road again to travel into town where they received a brief history of the area at a local bank. Finally, a picnic and slide show finished the week.
Next summer, the group will reunite when Somerset County 4-H members fly out to Washington.
Exchange Trip is definitely a favorite 4-H memory of mine and I was excited to participate again in some of the family events again this year. It is very educational and extremely fun! I am a great supporter of this program and hope that fro years into the future youth will travel to the “land of milk and maple” for the Interstate Exchange Trip. I would love to hear about trips other counties are participating or recently participated in! Leave a comment! Also, as fair season quickly approaches—I know there are many preparing. I wish you all the best!

Keeping Busy and Making Friends in 4-H
This past month I've been extremely busy with 4-H. I was a camp counselor for the Southwest Regional Camp. To prepare for that, I had to attend a day-long training session, to be ready for any camp situations that might arise. This also gave me the opportunity to get to know the several new counselors, and make new friends. It was an awesome week! The camp's theme was the Olympics. We had workshops on sports, staying healthy and smart drinks. One of my favorite activities, along with most of the campers, was having our own Olympics. All the campers got to take part in "real" events in our recreation field. As the end of camp gets near, most of us were ready to go home, but I miss all my friends, new and old, and start thinking about the memories and experience, as soon as I start unpacking.
I was also very busy all month, working on my sewing project, for the Southwest Pennsylvania Fashion Review. I made a gown, which I will wear for my Christmas dance. I had to have it finished June 17th to get the registration forms in on time, which had to include a picture of me wearing my project. Unfortunately for me, the final few days were during the Regional camp, so I had to be done even earlier. In the end, everything ended up working out. I took second place, which I was very proud of, because my project ended up being much more difficult than I expected.
Keep looking for more!

Recap of June
I hope everyone on is enjoying his or her summer! Mine has been quite busy lately. My family, friends and I have at least taken some time off to enjoy the weather and the nearby lake. In fact, one of my accomplishments this month is that I went wakeboarding for the first time ever! It was a blast! I had so much fun, until I woke up the next morning and was completely sore, haha.
This month has also been a busy month of 4-H activities. Earlier this month, State Council held a meeting on campus at Penn State. We began preparing for the always-exciting PA State Achievement Days and finalized some plans for State Leadership Conference. Also near this time, I attended Somerset Co. 4-H camp to assist with activities. The theme this year was “Survivor” and participants had a great weekend. I hope everyone else who attended camp so far had a great time too!
Another big event this month, Fashion Review, has allowed members to have fun and express their creativity and talent. Somerset County recently held its contest and so has the Southwest Region. Emily and I attended the SW Regional Fashion Review. Contestants hit it big with “4-H Project Runway”. There was definitely great skill lighting up this year’s Fashion Review runway. The event was held in Greensburg, PA. At the contest, I assisted with registration and other odd jobs. Emily was also a participant modeling a gorgeous purple gown. During the program, we had the honor of announcing the winners of which the top 10 seniors have the opportunity to advance to the contest as State Days. This year, there was a wide range of projects from historic costumes to formal wear. Also judged were non-wearable items such as pillows and tote bags. When not practicing their walk or being judged, members got to create a scrapbook page to remember the occasion and also enjoyed sewing demonstrations. I had a great time and would like to congratulate all participants—job well done! Also, best wishes to those advancing to State Days!
Well…got to run, Somerset County is participating in the 4-H interstate exchange this week. My sister is hosting a girl from the state of Washington! I’ll give you all an update once the festivities are over.
Have a great summer!!

IT"S SUMMER TIME!!!
Your Secretary,
RACHEL
Summer is here
I hope you all are enjoying your summer so far. I have been busy working on camp counselor work and also for my display for the Lycoming County Fair. I had the opportunity in June here to attend 4-H camp as a counselor and help the younger kids. I am also working on my State Day things, which include memorizing my lines for opening and also for my podcast. I hope that you will attend State Days so you can meet new members and even compete in a contest.
Right now I am busy working on my STAR event for the one club I was involved in at school, because I made it to the National Meeting in Florida.
My horses are another important factor right now because I show almost every weekend getting them ready for my 4-H round up. In my horse club we had our quality insurance meeting that I got to help with. It was nice being able to teach the younger children on how to be safe around there horses.
I am enjoying my second to last year in 4-H and I will most defiantly miss it but the friends I made will stay with me.
Until next time

The Clover Clipboard!
As some of you know that 4-H has a monthly newsletter created by the entire council by what they do each month! An added little quark is that it’s reported to you by one of the council members.
In each issue it includes a report of what each member has been doing throughout the month, a review/preview of a 4-H event, and a “Spotlight” article on a different member each month. The Clover Clipboard can be found at http://ps4-hc.cas.psu.edu/206.htm . You should definitely check it out!
Hope to see you soon!

Try New Things This Summer!
As the summer season is approaching, you’ll find you’re opportunities are growing. It’s always surprising what new experiences can bring you. Sometimes stepping outside your box is just what you need to find what you’ve all along been looking for.
For instance, attending a different event or a exploring a new project will open your eyes to a field you didn‘t know existed. From experience, I didn’t know think I could ever uphold a leadership position until I went to camp as a counselor at our regional 4-H camp. After something so fun, found myself wanting to become more active!
Which eventually got me to where I am now. So if an opportunity arises, take it with all the ambition you can muster. No matter how hard it may be!
Until next time,

Wrapping Up a School Year, Getting Serious About 4-H!
I had my first dog class at my new club this past week. It was a lot of fun to get to spend time with many new young members (and their pups). I also recently purchased the materials I need for my sewing project. I'm making my Christmas dance gown. I'm excited to have one of a kind!
A few weeks ago I decided I wasn’t busy enough, and applied at my local King’s Restaurant. I was hired on the spot! My summer is going to be busy, interesting, and fun. I’m so excited I just can’t wait!
Keep checking for more!!

Summers coming!!
Summer is soon approaching and that means no school and more time to do 4-H related activities. I am very excited for the summer months along with horse shows and traveling. During the month of May I have done some things for the 4-H world. I have talked to a woman at a local horse show about 4-H and my role as a State Council member. I am also working on an article for my county’s newsletter for the month of June. My council members and I had our first phone conference and it was very different - for me at least. The next couple of months are busy for us as we start to prepare for our next big event: State Achievement Days. Good luck as you prepare for your contest, I hope to see you there!
For now, Good Luck to the seniors graduating this year and also to everyone that is showing animals!
Until Next Time,

TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN!!!!
The 2008 leadership conference date has been moved up! Save the dates January 30th thru February 1st. Circle your calendar! Keep an eye out for all the early bird registration information. The "Dive Into Leadership" theme is pretty "fishtastic", if you ask me. Finally, I want everyone to "Check Out the Silver" , which is the 2008 statewide service learning project. Our goal is to collect pop tabs all year long, and then remember to bring the to the conference. The pop tabs will be transformed into money, which is then donated to "Ronald McDonald Houses." The more regions that take part, the more people we can help out. As a reward for participation, the region that brings in the most will be recognized during the closing ceremony.
That's all for now,
Emily Gabriel
"President's Message"
State Council has been very busy lately, beginning to plan for State Day’s and the State Leadership Conference. You may have seen us at Capital Days this month. The event I most enjoyed was meeting with Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Dennis Wolff. He gave us some insights to current legislation dealing with agriculture. Another big event at Capital Days was the mock legislative session. I had the duty to preside over this event that allowed the 4-H members to put the skills they learned at previous workshops into action. It was definitely an interesting experience for me.
In my home county of Somerset, we recently held our annual presentation contest. Upon the conclusion of judging, the winning speeches were presented on stage. Topics included the importance of preserving the Black Rhino, keeping our family history alive, organic farming and hemispheric dominance of our brains. It was a great evening for all who attended!
Well, once again I send best wishes to all of you. I know this is a crazy time of year for most people. I am busy, too, with preparations for graduation and college!

Hi all!
Hope you all are having fun so far this year! My name is Jennifer Lucas and I’m the 2008 Pennsylvania State 4-H Council Historian. I’m from Clarion County in the Northwest region of the state. I began showing sheep my first year enrolled in 4-H at age 8, and for the past 7 years I’ve been showing Jersey dairy cattle as my projects.
The end of February brought the council to State College for its orientation weekend retreat. This weekend was very informal and helpful to me. One of the most memorable things I learned over the weekend was that 4-H has an alliance with the handicap dog training association. I found this fascinating because I never connected 4-H with training handicap dogs. Come back later for more cool information!

4-H is 4-FUN
My name is Emily Gabriel. I am from Westmoreland County, in the Southwest region. I’m one of two girls from the region on the PA 4-H State Council. For the 2008 year, I have been selected as the Vice-President of Conference.
In brief, I love 4-H. The activities are fun, and I love meeting new people. For my projects, I show my dog, rabbits, cooking, and sewing. I’m interested in doing more with public speaking this year, too. This will be my eighth year in 4-H, which means I have been involved in it since I was first old enough to join. I LOVE it!
Training weeked was extremely busy, but very educational. I learned several new things I would not otherwise have learned, from facts about 4-H, to how to present a great workshop. One of the favorite things I learned during the weekend was to form great answers to "elevator questions," which are commonly asked and usually tricky questions.
Stay tuned for more!

Dear readers,
Hello! My name is Joshua Kays, the 2008 PS4-HC V.P. of Internal Affairs. I joined State Council to improve 4-H through my love of 4-H. This year, I hope to raise money for the Leadership Conference, to improve participation in the conference state wide, and to encourage members of the 4-H community to "live the motto" by making the best better in all that they do. Luckily, I was provided the tools necessary to accomplish these goals at the 3-day training weekend in the Penn State Days Inn Hotel.
Speaking of which, wow! What a weekend we had! I thought I would be missing school and getting a break when I called out on Friday to drive to Penn State. However, from the moment we started till the second we stopped, I felt that I, and the rest of our 7-member council, seemed to never stop learning! That weekend was probably the most challenging event that I have ever participated in, both mentally and cognitively. I am SO glad I'm part of this wonderful opportunity, and I'm looking forward to the next event on our calendar: Capitol Days! Until next time….
ttyl!

Introduction
At the recent State Leadership Conference (February 15th -17th ) these individuals officially began their council year. It was very exciting for us to finally meet face-to-face and we immediately began sharing our experiences and ideas. We were “Groovin’ into Leadership” with other members, as we attended various workshops including Communications, Time Management, and Team Building. My favorite part was the guest speaker, he had amazing dance skills and a superb sense of humor.
The skills and preparation we experienced at the conference were just the beginning of our initial training. We just completed a jam-packed weekend of workshops and activities. Not only did we learn many important skills, we learned more about our duties in order to better serve all of you. I learned this weekend how to be more “tech savvy” and how to develop good workshops. This was also a huge opportunity for us to get to know each other better and begin to lay the foundation of our team.
I can’t wait for all that is to come, especially Capital Days next month! This will be my first year to attend this event, so I will be working extra hard to prepare! It going to be tons of fun, and remember I will be learning too!
Also, please be sure to check back here often to find out the latest news and information from your State Council. Of course, no matter what, good news should be shared with others! Keep your friends and local leaders informed of the opportunities this year holds. I would like to wish everyone a very happy and successful year!
