Greetings PA 4-H members!
I hope everyone on is enjoying his or her summer! Mine has been quite busy lately. My family, friends and I have at least taken some time off to enjoy the weather and the nearby lake. In fact, one of my accomplishments this month is that I went wakeboarding for the first time ever! It was a blast! I had so much fun, until I woke up the next morning and was completely sore, haha.
This month has also been a busy month of 4-H activities. Earlier this month, State Council held a meeting on campus at Penn State. We began preparing for the always-exciting PA State Achievement Days and finalized some plans for State Leadership Conference. Also near this time, I attended Somerset Co. 4-H camp to assist with activities. The theme this year was “Survivor” and participants had a great weekend. I hope everyone else who attended camp so far had a great time too!
Another big event this month, Fashion Review, has allowed members to have fun and express their creativity and talent. Somerset County recently held its contest and so has the Southwest Region. Emily and I attended the SW Regional Fashion Review. Contestants hit it big with “4-H Project Runway”. There was definitely great skill lighting up this year’s Fashion Review runway. The event was held in Greensburg, PA. At the contest, I assisted with registration and other odd jobs. Emily was also a participant modeling a gorgeous purple gown. During the program, we had the honor of announcing the winners of which the top 10 seniors have the opportunity to advance to the contest as State Days. This year, there was a wide range of projects from historic costumes to formal wear. Also judged were non-wearable items such as pillows and tote bags. When not practicing their walk or being judged, members got to create a scrapbook page to remember the occasion and also enjoyed sewing demonstrations. I had a great time and would like to congratulate all participants—job well done! Also, best wishes to those advancing to State Days!
Well…got to run, Somerset County is participating in the 4-H interstate exchange this week. My sister is hosting a girl from the state of Washington! I’ll give you all an update once the festivities are over.
Have a great summer!!
Yours in green,
Danielle Shaffer
